Mavic Comet 45/55 and 55/65: the real Comets arrive
Two comets in four months. In May 2026, Mavic launched the Comet 50 : 23mm inner rim width, 1315g, 2499€. On 1 September 2026, the trade mark presented Mavic Comet 45/55 and 55/65, with a 25mm rim set on the 30mm tire, 21 carbon rays per wheel and standard ceramic bearings. The Mavic Comet 45/55 weigh 1350g the pair, the 55/65 1390g, still for 2499€. The Comet 85/85 and 85/Disc range for chrono and triathlon. So why two generations so close, and which is the real Comet? We're decorating.

Comet 50 against Comet 45/55: two wheels, two philosophies at Mavic
Back in May. The Comet 50 comes with a technical sheet that ticks all the boxes expected on the segment: profile of 50mm, 23mm internal width for 30mm external width, 21 carbon rays provided by Vonoa, ceramic bearings, 1315g the pair (600g front, 715g behind), all tested in the wind tunnel with 28mm tires. Mavic then announced 12 seconds won over 50km against his own Cosmic SLR 45. Vonoa is also the supplier of Newmen Streem Vonoa, sold 1690€.
According to our information, Comet 50 was released in the rush to respond to the pressure of Newmen and the Chinese carbon wheels. A rim catalogue, a fact sheet based on what the market demands, and little R&D behind. It is also found today in the first stage at Berria or Look. Comet 45/55 and 55/65 are the next step, the real one: Mavi's own moulds, home-made technical choices and tipping it to the 25mm rim. With this transition to 25mm, Mavic is no longer just following the market, the brand wants to give the tempo again.
A detail is not misleading: much of the launch speech is recycled from one Comet to another. The 250 hours of wind tunneling in Geneva, the 57 test protocols, the stamina equivalent to 700000km, the 18% less rolling trail on the rays and lightened hubs of 5g and 22g were already included in the communication of Comet 50. What really changes on the 45/55 and 55/65 is the rim. Another point to note: at the same price, Comet 50 remains lighter than Comet 45/55 (1315g versus 1350g).
Mavic Comet 45/55 and 55/65: a 25mm rim designed for the 30mm tire
The rim increases to 25mm internal width (24.8mm on the detailed sheet, ETRTO 622x25TC) for 34mm external width. It remains hooked, UST Tubeless Ready, with the Adaptive Layup dredging (fibers T700, T1000 and 3K). The actual profiles are 45.2mm front and 55.2mm back on 45/55, 55.2mm and 64.6mm on 55/65. The front wheel is always 10mm lower than the rear: from the front steering precision, from the rear aero.

Mavic claims that a 25mm rim torque / 30mm tire is 11% more effective in rolling resistance than a 23/28 torque. Credible, but this gain is due at least as much to the 30mm tire as to the rim itself. Two limits on the Mavic plug: 29mm minimum tire and 5 bar of pressure maximum. In terms of usage, the brand directs the Mavic Comet 45/55 to the routes with real ascents, and the Comet 55/65 to the fast races under 1500m of elevation.

Carbon radius, ID360 hub and ceramic bearings on the new Comet
Each wheel receives 21 straight carbon rays in 14/7: 14 crossed by 2 side disc at the front and side cassette at the rear, 7 radials on the opposite side, with locked heads to stabilize the tension. The hub uses the Instant Drive 360 system 40 teeth (9° of engagement), aluminium body and axis, Mavic Ceramic bearings. Shimano HG-R 11/12v cassette body or SRAM XDR 12/13v, optional Campagnolo N3W kit, 12×100 and 12×142 cross axes, Centerlock disc braking. Each wheel is assembled by hand in the Mavic laboratory in Chavanod and the Mavic Comets are eligible for the Mavic lifetime warranty.

Mavic Comet Aero Winnings: Watts vs. Anonymous Competitors
Mavic announces that the Aero Wide rim saves 5-10W per real wind (10-20° impact), and that its 55mm wheel gains 1.6W in combined resistance (aircraft and bearing) against its « direct competitor »up to 9.1W against the rest of the panel. Classic problem: no competitor is named and the full protocol is not public. And 1.6W is a deviation that the choice of tire or pressure can erase. These figures remain household data, to be confirmed by independent tests. To measure what a few watts really weigh on a course, our Wheel comparison put promises in perspective.

Comet 85/85 and 85/Disc: chrono and triathlon
The Mavic Comet 85 follow another logic: 23mm internal and 31mm external rim, 28mm reference tire. The 85/85 weigh 1750g for 2499€. The 85/Disc combines the 85mm front wheel with a full rear wheel, for 1785g, or 1149€ and 2599€ Back. Mavic announces for the front wheel 65.15W at 50km/h against 67.10W for a competitor, again anonymous, that is 1.95W better and 5.7W on the pair.

My opinion
The Mavic Comet 45/55 and 55/65 are the wheels that the brand should have come out from the start. 25mm house rim, differentiated profiles according to the field, carbon rays, ceramic bearings, cassette body compatible with the three standards, assembly by hand in Haute-Savoie and lifetime warranty: the plug is complete, and above all it finally carries choices specific to Mavic rather than a response to the competition catalogue.
What makes you tick: 1350g to 2499€, that's correct, not a reference, and Comet 50 is lighter at the same price. Aero gains are always based on anonymous comparisons. The Mavic Comet 45/55 and 55/65 are the first true Comet of this new generation, more successful than Comet 50, but at 2499€ They will have to prove on the road that their 25mm rim is worth the difference with a competition that has often pulled the market down. Do you hesitate between Comet 50 and Comet 45/55? Say it in comment.
